There will also be weekly prize drawings!
The Summer Reading Program is important because it helps children retain reading skills during the summer and encourages them to read for pleasure. To add to the fun and create a sense of challenge that will keep kids reading, we like to offer incentives prizes. Because of our limited budget, we cannot afford to offer these incentives without help. We appreciate any donation you care to make. Possible donations include items to give away as prizes; small toys, coupons for free goods or services (admission tickets, fast food coupons, free item, etc.) or cash to buy prizes and support materials. Your donation may be tax deductible. Another great way to help is to sponsor one or more kids. For more information on how to sponsor a summer reader, see page 3 of this newsletter or contact the library.

Summer Reading Rules: Summer Readers of all ages and reading abilities can begin signing-up for the 2019 Summer Reading Program on Thursday, May 30th. Participants can sign-up for the program any time from May 30th through July 23rd, but must be signed-up before reading to earn tokens. Participants who can read on their own must read materials at their reading level to earn tokens. Pre-readers can be read to by anyone to earn tokens and siblings who read to pre-readers will also earn tokens for both the pre-reader and themselves. Librarians will occasionally ask readers to give a verbal report about what they have read. Readers who attempt to collect tokens for material they did not read will lose all incentive prizes and tokens for the remainder of the summer. Tokens can be used to purchase incentive prizes at the Summer Reading Incentive Store. The store will be available beginning June 5th, following the first summer reading program, and will be available each day through the summer reading party on July 31st. Prizes must be purchased no later than the summer reading party. Readers can make purchases at the store once each day, even on days we are not holding summer reading programs, but only once each day. Parents are welcome to assist their children with making good prize choices, but are asked to please allow the children to buy their own prizes! Also, please be aware that different prizes are appropriate for different ages and all prizes are inexpensive, so please don’t expect *refunds* or *exchanges* after prizes have been taken out of the library. Prizes will be added to the incentive store by staff at staff discretion and all items may not be available at all times, so check back often, but please don’t ask staff to check for or add prizes to the incentive store.
Sponsor A Summer Reader
Each year the Meadows Valley Public Library offers a FREE Summer Reading Program to all area children. Last summer, 88 children, ages 0 to 17, and 30 adults, participated in the program. The library cares about children and has planned programs to keep them reading and learning this summer. Children who join the summer reading program keep their brains active and enter school in the fall ready to learn and ready to succeed. The Summer Reading Program is a positive and safe environment for kids and provides them a beneficial way to spend their free time. Summer Reading Participants are given book bags, pencils, bookmarks, activity pages, and more when they sign-up for the program. Readers also earn incentive prizes by reading and tracking how much they read. The library also provides crafts, games and treats for all of the summer readers. Of course, providing this kind of quality program costs money, but participants and their families are never charged a fee for any part of the program and all children are welcome and encouraged to participate. You can help the library present such a valuable program by sponsoring one or more Summer Readers! Each sponsorship is just $10 and provides a summer reader with all of the fun the Summer Reading Program has to offer! We can’t do it without help, so please consider sponsoring a Summer Reader! If you would like to be a Sponsor, please send donations to: Meadows Valley Public Library, P.O. Box 436, New Meadows, ID 83654 or you can drop your donation at the library. Your donation may be tax deductible. Thanks for your help!
Be A Summer Reading Volunteer
We need volunteers for the 2019 Summer Reading Program. Volunteers are needed for things such as:
** Reading during story time ** Helping during craft/game time ** Providing snacks
During the summer reading program it is common to have 35 or more kids at a program and over 50 at the end party, so all adult help is welcome and appreciated! We also appreciate youth volunteers who are interested in helping out. Volunteers are welcome to help with a single program, a few programs or all 8 programs. There are sign-up sheets at the library for the various volunteer jobs available. If you are interested in helping, please stop by the library any time to sign-up or contact the library at 347-3147 or [email protected].
